Welcome to Prague

20160425_125443_edited_edited_edited.jpg

Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is a beautiful city that was spared the destruction of the 20th-century wars.  One of the main attractions is the Astronomical clock, located in the heart of Old Town Square.  There are several Gothic churches, the Charles Bridge lined with statues, and many more sites to see.  The historic area of Prague is considered a World Heritage Site. We flew into Prague after staying three days Amsterdam, then stayed for two days in Prague, and then finished our trip off with a 4-hour train ride to Berlin, where we spent another three days.  We've added a map to give you an idea of where things are located.  On your cell phone, you can easily enlarge the map. Please down load the map prior to leaving home or take a picture on you phone for later reference.

When to go:  Early spring or late fall offers mild temperatures between the 50s and 60s, and hotels are at bargain prices. Summer temperatures are warm, hovering in the mid-70s,  but hotel prices can be much higher.

Where to stay:  We recommend staying close to Old Town Square.  You are in the heart of the city with easy walking distance to many of the main attractions. Look for a hotel like Ventana Hotel with a great lobby to meet fellow travelers at the end of the day and share stories and travel tips.

Day 1
We started our day in Old Town Square where we joined a free 2.45-hour walking tour at the visitor center located to the left of the clock. This is a great way to learn about the city, get your bearings, and score restaurant recommendations from your guide when you adventure out on your own. After the tour, we explored the shops around Old Town Square and then made our way to Charles Bridge. After crossing the bridge there are so many places to explore.  If you exit to the left as you go over the bridge, you can visit the John Lennon wall where people leave painted messages.  Every so often the city paints over the messages and then everyone starts all over again.

Day 2

On our second day, we headed to the Jewish Quarter of Prague.  In the evening we took in a musical performance, Carmina Burana.  The theater and musical performances in Prague are very reasonable.  We purchased tickets on-site without any issues.
